Presented
Current Trends and the Future Vectors of Crew Resource Management Training

WHEN -- February 27 – March 1, 2007
WHERE -- Daytona Beach, Florida
HOST -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, College of Aviation

This joint industry, government, and collegiate symposium focused on the current state and future challenges of aviation and aerospace crew resource management training.

The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University College of Aviation was the symposium host . Faculty from the University's Daytona Beach, Fla., Prescott, Ariz., and Worldwide campuses participated.

About the Symposium

We wish to unite the leading thinkers of Crew Resource Management in one place for three days in order to chart the best path for CRM’s future development.

B-2 pilotsThe purpose of the symposium is to create specific development plans (“vectors”) for each aspect of the industry (i.e., airlines, corporate aviation, astronautics, military, academe, government). The takeaway for each participant will be a clear vision of where CRM needs to go to meet the specific operational and training needs of each segment in the industry; plus concrete plans for achieving the vision.

Unlike traditional symposia, where speakers speak and the audience listens, we have something very special in store for you. We call the event “CRM Vectors” because we want you to leave with a very specific idea of where and how CRM will develop in the coming years. Although the tenets of CRM are universal, we acknowledge that CRM should be tailored to each specific flying operation in order to maximize flight safety. Therefore, we want to produce a series of vectors, each one tailored to your specific flying niche.

In order to determine the appropriate future development of CRM and to produce a plan for achieving it, we have created a three-day idea sharing event that follows a unique format. A series of seven workshops have been designed to create consensus as to what the future of CRM should be. The first four workshops exposed participants to current CRM initiatives and possible visions of the future. There are amazing initiatives being pursued by some corners of the aviation industry that others have not heard about.

The subsequent three workshops focused the previous thoughts into action plans tailored to the specific needs of each participant’s section of the industry. Deicing a Gulfstream

Each workshop was guided by 1.) Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) faculty members who are experienced pilots, knowledgeable in current CRM hot topics, and by 2.) trained ERAU facilitators.

During the symposium, participants were assigned to two different teams. For the first few workshops, participants brainstormed together with representatives of all the different parts of aviation. Then, new teams were formed so as to focus the previous discussions on your specific corner of the flying world.

Who should attend this symposium?

  • Check airmen and instructor pilots from airlines, corporate flight departments, and the armed services
  • Government regulators and safety inspectors
  • Professors of aviation, flight safety, CRM, and human factors
  • Safety, CRM, TEM and human factors consultants
  • Commercial and government space flight controllers and astronauts
  • Aviation psychologists
  • Aviation accident investigators
  • Human factors engineers and cockpit design specialists
  • Investigative journalists writing about the symposium processes and conclusions
  • Experienced general aviation flight instructors and designated examiners

This is a global symposium and we welcome participants from all countries.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University invites academe, the government, and the aviation industry to develop the future of crew resource management training. The overall objective of this symposium is to provide a highly interactive opportunity to share current research, trends, and challenges in CRM.

We want to develop strategies which ensure that university-based aviation training programs are providing the industry with qualified graduates who possess the pre-requisite knowledge to excel in industry-based new-hire training programs and succeed as members of professional flight crews.
